About Jang Yoon-jeong

Jang Yoon-jeong is the QUEEEEN of trot. She is my favorite trot artist. She started in trot when she was young, just 24; she's coming up on 20 years and could easily go for another 20, or longer. She's one of the most popular singers in South Korea, across genres. She got married in 2013 and has made her family and kids into a bit of a brand, which is weird, but I love her so it's okay. She is often the "lead" judge on trot and singing competitions and very well regarded in the industry.

One thing I love about JYJ (as I usually refer to her...) is her diverse musical style. Trot is a pretty tightly defined genre, but she always keeps it fresh by using different instruments and styles. One defining element of trot is a particular vocal style--a sort of vocal wavering sound, easy to hear hard to describe--and her use of it is interesting. I don't think I've ever heard her do it on a recorded track, but she will do it will singing live and/or for covers. She can do it, and do it well, but does it sparingly; it's a nice balance, as some rookies overdo it. Her voice has gotten MUCH higher with age, which you'll hear in some of the older videos.

Here's how much time I've spent listening to JYJ: I watched her Hidden Singer competition, and identified her correctly EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. BOTH TIMES SHE WENT ON.

I have so many favorite songs by Jang Yoon-jeong that it's hard to limit myself. Let's get right into it:

벚꽃길, Cherry Blossom Road. This was my top song on Spotify Wrapped for TWO YEARS in a row. The beat is infinitely catchy and the lyrics are hilarious. She literally said "fuck the housewife agenda, men don't know shit!! I will be busy looking stunning and doing simple yet elegant dance moves to the greatest song of all time!!!"

왔구나 왔어, Coming Up. "It's coming! Love is coming!" There is no better opening line, and this performance is an astronomical slay. The red shoes and polka dot dress? The dance? The guy beating the drum? The pure joy of every person in that room!? This never fails to cheer me up.

짠짜라, Jjanjjara. This is one of her older songs, originally from 2005, and it's ALWAYS good. I love me some accordion and it's so fun to sing along to. So cute at 25, and she always looks so happy when she performs. This song is still popular; a few years ago, Niel (Teen Top) and Lizzi (Orange Caramel) did a cover of it on King of Masked Singer, and you can see everyone singing along. So classic SK reality tv drama that the judges are acting like they can't recognize Niel's voice; I watched this vid because of Lizzi and immediately knew it was Niel without his name in the title. Whatever.

천생연분, Match Made in Heaven. This is actually a cover of a hilarious 90s song that she did with her husband, who's also an entertainer. They are just having so much fun up there, and the funniest part of his rap is that she did go on to have a daughter. The way she laughs before pulling him up by his nose gets me every time. True professionals.

어부바, Piggyback. This song gets me so fricking hyped! And, the kitten heels with the capris make me laugh every time. I can never resist this beat.

I'll stop here. We could be here for hours. She literally has a song called "Jang Yoon-Jeong Twist." How iconic do you have to be to have a song with your own name? Not to mention ballads, covers, b-sides, interviews, hosting, videos of her kids and husband... but we'll stop.

So, what's she doing now? A few months ago she put out a 2 track ep. The title song is a ballad that I don't like (I don't like ballads in general, even hers), but the b-side 너무 좋아 좋아, So Good/I Really Like It is a BAAANGGEERRR. I can't find a performance, not even searching in Korean, so she must be doing other things. Here's a link to the 너무 좋아 좋아 audio on Youtube. Just... go listen to her erntire discography. You're welcome.
